School Counseling Overview
A School Counselor's primary responsibility is to promote academic, social/emotional, and career growth for all students. I do this through large group classroom lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling. I collaborate with the administrators, teachers, parents/guardians, and community organizations to help meet the needs of the students.
About me
I am an Atlanta area native and I attended Auburn University (War Eagle!). I graduated with a BA in Psychology and Human Development and Family Studies and a MEd in School Counseling. My husband and I have a daughter and son who keep us busy on the soccer fields. I am excited to be a part of the Oak Grove Family!
Classroom LessonsI meet with each class once a month and teach lessons based on the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Mindsets and Behaviors. Topics will focus on academic success, social/emotional development, and career awareness (based on the GA 17 career clusters).
Small Groups
I will meet with some students in small groups for limited amounts of time (usually once a week for 6-8 weeks) to develop skills and provide support. Topics vary from year to year and are based on need as expressed by data, school staff, parents, and/or students. Some examples of topics are grief, friendship skills, and students new to the school. Parent/guardian permission will be obtained.
Individual CounselingI will meet with individual students throughout the year for short-term counseling. These students can refer themselves or they might be referred to me by parents/guardians or school staff. Our meetings will be short-term and brief. The goal is to give the students the tools they need to solve their problems and return to class. Sometimes, more support is needed and I will contact the parent/guardian to provide additional resources outside of the school setting.
