    Positive Behavior Interventions and Support

  • A key strategy for PBIS is prevention. It is an evidence-based, data-driven framework proven to reduce disciplinary incidents, increase a school’s sense of safety, and support improved academic outcomes.

Continually teaching, acknowledging or offering feedback on positive student behavior promotes a climate of greater productivity, safety, and learning.

HOW IS PBIS DIFFERENT THAN OTHER SCHOOL BEHAVIOR PROGRAMS?

    • Focused on acknowledging students for consistent, positive behavior
    • Direct instruction of expected behaviors occurs throughout the school year
    • Common language and routines are established with respect to appropriate behavior in the school setting
    • Problem behavior will be responded to with consistent consequences that focus on reteaching the expected behavior

  • MULTI-TIERED APPROACH

PBIS schools use a multi-tiered approach to prevention, using disciplinary data and principles of behavior analysis to develop school-wide, targeted, and individualized interventions or supports to improve school climate.

    TIER 1—UNIVERSAL

Tier 1 supports serve as the foundation for behavior and academics. Schools provide these supports to all students. For most students, the core program gives them what they need to be successful and to prevent future problems.

    TIER 2—TARGETED

This level of support focuses on improving specific skill deficits that students have. This is often provided to groups of students with similar targeted needs. This allows for more opportunities to practice and feedback while keeping the intervention maximally efficient.

    TIER 3—INDIVIDUALIZED

These are the most intensive interventions and supports that schools offer. At this level, schools typically rely on formal assessments to determine student needs and to develop an individualized plan of support. Student plans often include goals related to both academics as well as behavior support.

    HOW CAN PARENTS SUPPORT PBIS?

Parents are an important part of PBIS implementation. We encourage parents to use the same expectations that we teach at school. This common language creates consistency and unified support for student behavior. Children thrive when they have consistent and predictable expectations. To support positive behavior, you can:

    • Review the school’s behavior expectations with your child
    • Use the school’s PBIS matrix to develop behavior expectations for the home using the common language
    • Ask your child about his/her day at school every day
    • Make sure your child is ready every day. Ensure a good night’s sleep
    • Provide a quiet time/space for your child to do nightly homework
    • Encourage your child to use appropriate language and tone
    • Practice positive phrases with your child, such as, “Thank you,” “Excuse me,” “Please,” and “I’m sorry”
    • Communicate with teachers regarding behavior concerns
