Many of the students walking the halls of Robert J. Burch Elementary may give little thought to why their school bears his name. Now, they can learn about their namesake in their own media center. Named for the famed writer of 19 children’s books, the school is now home to many of his cherished mementos, and three generations of his family gathered to commemorate the gathering of the collection.
Since the award-winning author passed in 2007, the items had been on display in the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House Museum in downtown Fayetteville, but the collection was dismantled when the building was sold. Ellen Morton helped save it and bring it to the school’s media center.
Morton, who was the media specialist when the school opened in 1990, showed off the collection that includes his books, awards, newspaper clippings, and personal mementos. The author’s old typewriter drew a lot of attention, especially from the younger generation that has never gotten to use one.
They were also joined by Beth Refuss, who taught at the school and shared memories of Robert Burch Days past. Coinciding with what would have been his 99th birthday, they celebrated with a cake and other treats.
Great nephew Robert Burch was thrilled to see his relative “Uncle Rob” honored again at the school that shares his namesake.
“Seeing my great uncle's works and mementos on display was an incredibly moving experience,” he said. “It was a great reminder of our family's heritage and the legacy he left behind.”
It was even more special to be able to share the moment with multiple generations, as a niece, a great nephew and great niece, and six great-great nephews and nieces joined the tour.
“It was so special growing up with my uncle,” he said. “Being able to share him with my family in this way reinforced the importance of family history, and everyone enjoyed learning more about our great uncle.”
